In 1866, H. G. (Herbert George) Wells, English author whose first work "The Time Machine" pioneered science fiction, born. Best remembered for "War of the Worlds," his vision of a Martian invasion of Earth.

In 1912, animator Chuck Jones was born in Spokane, Washington. Jones grew up in Hollywood, where he observed Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton while working as a child extra in silent comedies. In 1932 he got his first job washing transparent sheets of celluloid (cels) in the fledgling animation industry. At Warner Bros., he was assigned to the team that made "Looney Tunes" and "Merrie Melodies" cartoons and went on to create some of Warner Bros.' most famous cartoon characters, including the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, and Pepe Le Pew. During his 60-year career he made more than 300 animated films and won three Oscars. He died at age 89 on February 22, 2002.
