In 1886, Coca Cola was introduced by pharmacist Dr. John Styth Pemberton who had been working on a new patent medicine, a headache and hangover remedy. In 1952, according to estimates, Mad Magazine debuts in newsstands. The face of Alfred E Neuman predates Mad Magazine by at least 50 years. He appeared often in the various EC publications before Mad was started. Originally he had no name, but writers occasionally attached some name to this ubiquitous face. Two names that were often used were Melvin Coznowski (multiple spellings) and Alfred E Neuman. Mad was originally a comic book. Though William Gaines was instrumental in the founding of the Comics Code Authority, he dropped out over a rule dispute. He dumped all of his comics except Mad, which he renamed Mad Magazine and changed to a not-quite-a-comic-book format.

In 1954, “The Spike Jones Show”, TV Variety, last aired on NBC.

In 1956, Oh, hello, Newman! Alfred E. Neuman (“What, me worry?”) first appeared on the cover of Mad magazine. He even got some votes in the presidential election, which was won by Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. Mad Magazine was founded by William Gaines.

In 1962, the musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” starring Zero Mostel opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theater in New York. The comedy opened at the Alvin Theatre in New York City. Audiences laughed through the entertaining show for a total of 964 performances.

In 1965, Gilliganʹs Island episode #32. “Physical Fatness”. Gilligan and the Skipper plan to join the Navy when they are rescued. However, when weighing themselves, they discover that Gilligan must gain weight, while the Skipper must diet.
