In 1902, 02 x 01 = 02
In 1949, RCA Victor countered Columbia Records' 33-1/3 'long play' phonograph disk on this day, with not only a smaller, 7-inch record (with a big hole in the center), but an entire phonograph playing system, as well. Soon, the newfangled product, which started a revolution (especially with the new rock and roll music) soon made the 78-rpm record a 'blast from the past'. The 45-rpm disk did well for about 20 years. Then it started to lose ground to cassette tapes, eight tracks and albums. Record companies, caught in the energy crisis of the early and mid-70s, found that it was cost prohibitive to keep turning out the little disks. So, they raised the price to where no one would buy them anymore. Then eight tracks died, albums, too -- and now we have compact discs that cost more than both of them combined -- and cassettes that sometimes sound worse than the 45s they replaced ... Those Were the Days.

In 1982, "Late Night With David Letterman", TV Talk Show, debut on NBC where it stayed for 11 years. (Due to the quirk in time zones, it was early February 2nd, Eastern/Pacific time at 12:30am when it premiered, but it was 11:30pm Central and Mountain times where it first aired, so the policy is to mention the earliest date it premiered nationwide, or the night it feels like it is.) As of on this date in 1998, they did (not counting the 90 daytime shows from 1980) 1,810 shows for the NBC version, plus 952 shows for a total of 2,762 shows (hey Donz, some new info please?)! In 1982, Bill Murray gets "Physical" on the very first of 1,809 "Late Night with David Letterman" episodes for the National Broadcasting Corporation. "Bill wanted to do something special, so he was coming down early to talk to the writers and see what they could come up with together," Letterman later recalled. "When he arrived, Merrill and I were out filming a segment, and Bill showed up with about six gallons of whatever tequila was on sale. When we got back, everybody was s***-faced, and it was dark, since Bill had decided the flourescent lights were leeching Vitamin E from them and he'd hidden all the lamps. Nothing was written, and the only explanation I could get from anyone was, 'Bill was here.' When we did get on the air, Bill decided not to do any of the stuff we'd written and got an urge to sing 'Let's Get Physical' and do aerobics. So he did."
