In 1954, Bill Thompsonʹs character Wallace Snead first appearred on the KPHO-TV produced “The Golddust Charlie Show” in Phoenix, Arizona. In January 1955, Thompson starred in the KPHO-TV childrenʹs variety show “Itʹs Wallace?” playing his character Wallace. The following year, Ladimir (Ladmo) Kwiatkowski joined the show. On June 15, 1970, it became “The Wallace and Ladmo Show”. The show also went through other titles such as “Hereʹs Wallace!” and, in 1968, “Wallace and Company”. It ran daily until December 29, 1989. Though officially a childrenʹs show, it became a cult favorite for a lot of parents and even childless adults who loved the subversive sense of humor and wacky cast of supporting characters. On the 30th anniversary show, audience member Alice Cooper even won a Ladmo bag. Some of the songs from “The Ladmo Trio” got played nationally on Dr. Dementoʹs radio show.
In 1957, all of Great Britain was fooled this April Foolʹs Day by Englandʹs famous newscaster, Richard Dimbleby. The newscaster, wrapping up the dayʹs news on “Panorama”, the BBCʹs current affairs program, reported about the “spring spaghetti crop in Italy.” The filmed report showed the spaghetti (some ten pounds of the stuff) being picked from a tree. Many Brits believed him, by Jove! One member of our staff remembers doing something similar by asking radio listeners to “send us $100 and weʹll send you 25 words or less.” He was fired. No foolin'!
