In 1906, comedian Henny (Henry) Youngman was born in Liverpool, England, and was later raised in Brooklyn, New York. Dubbed the “King of the One-Liners,” Youngman was known for his simple, rapid-fire jokes — sometimes telling over 50 of them in an eight-minute comedy routine. His famous one-liner — “Take my wife, please!” — became so popular it was included in Bartlettʹs Familiar Quotations. Youngman also appeared in such films as “The History of the World, Part I,” “Amazon Women on the Moon,” “The Unkissed Bride,” “National Lampoon Goes to the Movies” and in a cameo appearance in “Goodfellas.” His name also became a running gag on TVʹs “Rowan and Martinʹs Laugh-In” (“Oh! THAT Henny Youngman!”) He died at age 91 on February 24, 1998.

In 1934, An Academy Award (Short Subjects, Cartoons) is won for the film, “Three Little Pigs”.

In 1935, The Mickey Mouse film, “Mickeyʹs Service Station” is released. Donald Duck and Goofy also appear.

In 1945, the No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit was “Rum and Coca-Cola” by The Andrews Sisters. They said “things go better with Coke” back then, did they, or was it later?

The smash, hit song sold more than 7,000,000 records on more than 20 different labels. Everyone seemed to be singing the song that saluted the frontier hero who was “Born on a mountain top in Tennessee…” Coonskin caps started sprouting up everywhere as the Crockett craze spread like a frontier fire. “Davy Crockett” was a big TV show in the 1950s that starred Fess Parker in the memorable Walt Disney production.

In 1957, “The Gumby Show”, TV Childrens show by Art Clokey, debut on NBC as a spin-off of “The Howdy Doody Show.” The Claymation(tm) star was accompanied by his pony pal Pokey too; first runs also appearred in 1969 with new characters Prickle and Goo, and even more new episodes in 1988.

In 1958, The Coasters record “Yakety Yak”

In 1959, R.C., “Alvinʹs Harmonica” by The Chipmunks peaked at #3 on the pop singles chart.

In 1959, R.C., “I Got A Wife” by The Mark IV peaked at #24 on the pop singles chart.

In 1961, Walt Disneyʹs movie “The Absent Minded Professor” was released in movie theaters.

In 1963, Peter, Paul and Mary released the single, “Puff The Magic Dragon”. Through the years, controversy continually surrounded the song. It was banned by several radio stations whose management figured that the song was about the elicit joys of smoking marijuana. The group denied this startling assumption. “Itʹs about a magic dragon named Puff” they said. So there. The trio recorded a dozen hits that charted between 1962 and 1969. “Puff” was their third song. It went to number two on the pop charts and puffed around for nearly three months. The group next did a Bob Dylan protest song, “Blowin' In The Wind” and ended a sterling career with a John Denver song — the groupʹs biggest — “Leaving On A Jet Plane”.

In 1966, Frank Gorshin tells “Variety” heʹs signed a record deal with Columbia, to take advantage of his fame as a Batman villain. His first release will be a tappin' tune written by Mel Torme called, what else, “The Riddler.”

In 1966, “Batman” (also Mar 17) In his first two months in prime time, the Caped Crusader battled the Joker, the Riddler, and the Penguin — and became a national obsession. But when Catwoman steals his heart (not to mention two priceless gold cat statues) in “The Purr-Fect Crime” and “Better Luck Next Time,” Batman (Adam West) meets his match. Pursuing the lost treasure of pirate Captain Manx, Catwoman lures Batman and Robin (Burt Ward) to her hideout. She nearly does them in, but they break free and track her down. In the chase, she falls off a rocky ledge into a bottomless pit. But Catwoman had nine lives and appeared in eight more episodes. Although Newmar turned over her cat ears to Eartha Kitt, the first Catwoman remains the best. Meow and forever.

In 1979, “The China Syndrome” starring Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda, and Michael Douglas opened nationwide. Two weeks later, theater marquees proclaim “Itʹs happening In Harrisburg!” Another week after that, “Saturday Night Live” spoofed it in one of their most excellent parodies of all time in “The Pepsi Syndrome.”

In 1991, Eddie Van Halen and his wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli, gave birth to a son in Los Angeles. The couple named the child Wolfgang Van Halen. Why Wolfgang? After CNN war correspondent Wolf Blitzer? No, sorry. He was named after composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was rocked by Falco in the song “Rock Me, Amadeus”, which was parodied into “Rock Me Jerry Lewis” by Tri 5 f/ Mike and Bud, which. coincidently, is Jerry Lewisʹs birthday, who had many funny records played on “Dr. Demento”'s radio show, which also played “Big Bad William” by Van Halen, with guitarist Eddie Van Halen, wed to Val, who both gave birth to Wolfie. BINGO! A circular loop of association!

In 1991, “Saturday Night Liveʹs” Stuart Smalley (in Al Frankenʹs second sketch as the character) is forced to adjust when his “Daily Affirmation” is displaced to a late-night slot by a hair-replacement infomercial. “Maybe the show is garbage and they should cancel it,” he says.
